NREL’s Communications Office has an opening for a Professional II Communications Outreach Coordinator to support the lab’s international activities, such as our work with USAID and the Net Zero World Initiative. The ideal candidate will be adept in webinar and digital platforms, foundational project management, and communications and writing, pay strong attention to detail and quality, and exhibit the ability to maintain good working relationships with clients and team members.
The selected candidate will work closely with researchers as part of our dedicated communications team, which is structured in an agency-like setting and includes project managers, editors, graphic designers, digital specialists, and writers. We are looking for a self-motivated, collaborative individual with experience in traditional and digital communications and webinars, a keen interest in science communications outreach, and experience delivering results for clients in a fast-paced setting. You will coordinate multiple moderately complex communications projects under supervision, use established procedures, develop and track multiple deliverables in parallel, and work against deadlines.
Primary job functions will include:
  • Coordinate and track multiple communications project requests, timelines, and budgets.
  • Provide end to end webinar and event support from using relevant software platforms to compiling post event metrics and reporting.
  • Create and/or coordinate written content communicating NREL’s international efforts for news stories, newsletters, reports, videos, social media, and other outreach materials.
  • Develop and/or coordinate web content, following web standards and best practices.
  • Provide regular project progress status updates to team and clients.
  • Follow NREL publishing process and act as a publications resource to team members and clients.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with clients and colleagues.

About NREL and the Communications Office
NREL is the only U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) national laboratory dedicated to renewable energy and energy efficiency research. The NREL Communications Office comprises communications experts in a variety of disciplines focused on raising awareness about the lab and DOE programs. This position resides in the Communication Office’s Science and Technology Communications Group, which consists of multiple teams representing NREL’s wide-ranging research areas.

Basic Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in English, journalism, communications, marketing or a related field and 2 or more years of experience in communications, Public Affairs, marketing or related field. Or, Master's Degree in English, journalism, communications, marketing or a related field or equivalent relevant education/experience and experience in communications, Public Affairs, marketing or related field.
  • Must meet educational requirements prior to employment start date.
Additional Required Qualifications
  • Ability to work under guidance to complete moderately complex communications assignments including research, writing, and reviewing content for a variety of communication products, including both print and electronic media.
  • Ability to distill technical information into understandable and engaging content.
  • Strong client service mindset.
  • Superior organizational skills and demonstrated attention to detail and quality.
  • Experience with virtual and in person events.
  • Good project coordination skills, including leading tasks and developing and following budgets and schedules.
  • Experience with social media, email newsletters, video conferencing platforms, content management systems, and analytics tools.
  • Ability to outline and adhere to budgets and schedules for multichannel communications campaigns, reporting, and web events.
  • Nimbleness and flexibility to multitask in a fast-paced communications setting.
  • Comfort with quick-turnaround requests and ability to react positively to rapidly changing circumstances.
  • A can-do attitude and collaborative work style.
Preferred Qualifications
Previous science-, energy sector-, government-, or research-related communications experience as follows:
  • Previous science- or research-related communications experience.
  • Prior roles in a communication/public relations/advertising agency or similar corporate/organization department.
  • Experience adhering to brand guidelines and/or AP Style.
  • Experience with Microsoft Teams and Zoom.
  • Familiarity with renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies, and/or other technical subject matter.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)
Job Profile: Professional II / Annual Salary Range: $62,000 - $102,300
NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
